The climate here
A roof built for the weather we actually get
Whatcom County is hard on roofs, and it is hard on them slowly. It is not one storm that takes a roof out here. It is months of rain landing on a north slope that never dries, moss working its way under the laps, needles from a Douglas fir sitting in a valley until they turn into soil, and a Fraser outflow wind in January finding every fastener somebody rushed.
Metal handles that better than anything else you can put on a house in this climate, but only if it is detailed properly. A metal roof that sheds and lasts is mostly flashing, fastener choice and panel layout. Those are the parts nobody sees from the street and the parts that decide whether you think about your roof again in ten years.
That is the whole business. We install, replace and repair metal roofs in Whatcom County. We do not do composition shingles, cedar, tile or flat commercial membrane, and we will tell you plainly when metal is the wrong answer for your house.

We are not learning on your house
Most roofing companies in the county do composition first and metal occasionally. Metal is a different trade. Panels move as they heat and cool, fasteners have to allow for it, and a detail that works on shingles will leak on metal within two winters.
The details that fail here are the ones we plan for
Valleys that collect fir needles. North slopes that grow moss. Salt air out at Blaine and Birch Bay that eats an ordinary fastener. Wind coming down off the Fraser that lifts an unclipped edge. We detail for those specifically because we work here.

If your roof has eight good years left, a repair is the right call and we will say so. If your house is better suited to another material, we will tell you that too, and we do not install it, so we have no reason to say otherwise.

Common questions
What is the biggest problem with metal roofs?
Bad installation, by a distance. A properly detailed metal roof outlives the person who bought it. A poorly detailed one leaks at the flashings and the fasteners, usually within a few winters, and the panels themselves are rarely the problem. The second most common complaint is noise, which comes from panels laid straight onto purlins with no deck or underlayment underneath. Over a solid deck with underlayment, on a house, a metal roof in rain is not noticeably louder than anything else.
Is it cheaper to put a metal roof or shingles?
Shingles are cheaper to buy and cheaper to install. Metal costs more up front and lasts two to three times as long, so the comparison only makes sense over the life of the roof rather than at the invoice. If you plan to sell in two years, shingles are the rational choice. If you are staying, metal usually is.
What is the typical lifespan of a metal roof?
Decades rather than years, and in this climate the limit is usually the fasteners and the flashings rather than the panels. An exposed fastener roof needs its screws revisited long before the metal is finished. A standing seam roof has no exposed fasteners to age out, which is most of why it costs more.
Can a metal roof be repaired?
Almost always, and far more easily than people expect. Individual panels can be replaced, seams and laps can be resealed, and failed fasteners can be swapped for oversized ones. A leak on a metal roof is a repair, not a reroof, unless the deck underneath has been wet long enough to rot.
Do metal roofs work in heavy rain?
This is the climate they are best in. Water sheds off a metal panel faster than off any textured material, there are no granules to wash away, and there is nothing for moss to root into the way it roots into a composition mat. The failure points in heavy rain are penetrations and valleys, which is exactly where the detailing work goes.
